Timber Staircase Polishing in Singapore

Stairs take more wear than any floor in the house. Every step lands on the same strip of each tread, so the varnish dulls, scratches and wears thin long before the rooms do. Polishing brings a timber staircase back in a day: we buff every tread, riser and nosing, clean off the dust and lay a fresh coat of hard-wearing PU varnish. Prices start from $350 per flight.

What's included

  • Light sanding / buffing of every tread, riser and nosing
  • One fresh coat of PU varnish in gloss, satin or matt
  • Walls, railings and floors below taped and protected
  • Final inspection and care advice
  • Hand work at nosings, corners and around balusters
  • Dust extraction and clean-up

Signs you need this

  • Dull, cloudy treads that no longer shine after mopping
  • Fine scratches and scuffs from shoes and pets
  • A slightly worn path in the middle of each step, but no bare wood yet
  • Stairs that look tired next to newly polished floors
  • Moving in or out and want the stairs to look their best

Polishing or full sanding?

Polishing works while the old varnish is still intact: the treads look dull and scratched, but you can't see bare, grey wood. If the middle of the steps has gone grey or black, the varnish has worn through and dirt is in the timber. Then the stairs need full sanding back to bare wood before varnishing. Send us a close-up photo of your most-used step and we'll tell you which one you need.

How we polish a staircase

  1. Protect the walls, railings and the floor at the bottom of the stairs with tape and sheeting.
  2. Repair any loose, broken or chewed pieces first, so they aren't polished over.
  3. Buff every tread, riser and nosing with fine abrasive, by machine on the flat and by hand at the edges.
  4. Vacuum and tack-cloth every step to remove all dust.
  5. Apply a fresh coat of PU varnish in your chosen sheen, working from the top down.
  6. Inspect with you once it's touch-dry and explain when you can use the stairs.

  3. Book a date. Jobs usually start 3 to 7 days after you confirm.
  4. We repair first, then polish or sand and varnish, in stages so you can still use the stairs.

Before we arrive

  • Clear anything stored on the steps and the landing.
  • Remove stair runners, mats and baby gates.
  • Tell us about loose, clicking or damaged steps you've noticed.
  • Plan where pets and young children will be during the work.
  • If this is your only staircase, tell us so we can plan the stages.

Frequently asked questions

How much does staircase polishing cost in Singapore?

Staircase polishing starts from $350 per flight of up to about 16 steps. Additional flights are priced the same way. Repairs start from $350 and full sanding is quoted after we see the stairs.

Can we still use the stairs during polishing?

Yes, with planning. We can varnish alternate steps or do the flight in two stages, so there's always a way up and down. If you can stay elsewhere for the day, the job is faster.

Is a polished staircase slippery?

A fresh gloss finish can feel slippery in socks. For families with young children or elderly parents we recommend satin varnish or an anti-slip additive in the final coat.

How often should timber stairs be polished?

Every 2 to 3 years in a busy household, before the varnish wears through. Polishing on time is much cheaper than a full sanding later.
