Gloss vs satin vs matt varnish on wooden stairs, and when to add an anti-slip finish for children and elderly family members in Singapore homes.

Gloss

Gloss looks rich and reflects light, but it shows every scratch and can feel slippery in socks. It suits stairs that are lightly used or homes without small children or elderly family members.

Satin

Satin is our usual recommendation for stairs. It keeps the warmth of the timber, hides scratches and dust better than gloss and gives better grip underfoot.

Matt

Matt gives a natural, almost unfinished look and hides wear best. It's popular with modern interiors and lighter timber.
