The fingernail test
Run a fingernail across the scratch. If it glides over and you only see a white line, the scratch is in the varnish and a polish will remove it. If your nail catches and you can see raw wood, the scratch has gone through the finish and the tread needs sanding and refinishing. If you can feel a groove or the fibres are torn, it's a gouge that needs filling or a new piece of timber.

How a job works

- We repair first, then polish or sand and varnish, in stages so you can still use the stairs.

Put felt pads under anything stored on the stairs, use a doormat at the bottom, and wrap furniture legs before moving anything up or down.
